The weight of the host machine is the most crucial component in concrete breaking. Given that skid steers are heavy with a low and close center of gravity, they are the best host machines for operating breakers.

Breaking concrete requires applying pressure over a small area. This pressure is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). You may require around 5,000 PSI to break concrete (<a href="https://www.concretenetwork.com/concrete/compressive-strength-psi.html" target="_blank" title="different concrete " rel="noopener">depending on a few factors</a>).

If you have a 9,000-pound skid steer with a 1,000-pound breaker attachment and a chisel tool that has a surface area of 1.5 square inches, your pressure per square inch is 6,666 PSI.

Although the hammering action of a hydraulic breaker is essential for breaking concrete, it will only add a small amount of additional PSI. For example, a 1,000 foot-pound energy class will only add an additional 600 to 700 PSI.

Therefore, putting a big hydraulic breaker on a small host machine won’t break concrete. But putting a hydraulic breaker on a skid steer will break concrete all day long.
